Upcoming Mediation Courses

Wendy Forrester teaches mediation at UC Santa Barbara in the Mediation and Dispute Resolution Certificate Program. Mediation skills are valuable in a variety of professions, such as law, human resources and healthcare. Mediation skills improve working and personal relationships and increase productivity by creating a more positive workplace environment. These highly interactive courses are designed for those pursuing a career in dispute resolution and those seeking to develop communications skills for use in the workplace and in their personal lives. Wendy is scheduled to instruct the following Spring 2015 courses:

Beyond Reason: Understanding Emotions

The course provides an understanding of the emotions that drive conflict. Students learn a framework within which to identify and effectively deal with emotions in mediation and negotiation. The course is based in part on the book Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate by Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro. Through exercises and role plays students develop communications skills and strategies to prevent and resolve conflict.

Family Mediation

Family Mediation expands the notion of traditional family to post-modern family dynamics and issues, such as divorced and blended families, generational differences, eldercare issues and cross cultural relationships. Topics include understanding psychological aspects of family conflict, mediating family disputes, identifying interests, adapting to differences in communication styles and values to help families resolve emotional and financial concerns. This highly interactive course encourages students to participate in class discussions, role plays and exercises.
This course is taught at the UCSB Extension Ventura Campus
